What is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Extractions can be performed for various reasons, such as removing teeth that are damaged beyond repair, making room for orthodontic treatment, or treating a severe infection or abscess. Extractions may also be necessary to prevent overcrowding of the teeth.

Our dentist will always attempt to save your tooth before considering tooth extraction. He will first evaluate the issue and discuss the best course of action with you. If possible, he will attempt non-invasive treatments such as a root canal, crown, or filling to keep the tooth in place. He will also discuss the benefits and risks of each treatment option with you. If a tooth extraction is necessary, he will take the time to explain the procedure and what to expect afterward. He will also discuss possible tooth replacement options with you, such as a dental implant or bridge. Our dentist will ensure you are comfortable with the decision and understand all the risks and benefits before proceeding.

At Oxford Family Dentistry, we understand the importance of discussing your needs and concerns before performing an extraction. Our team will work with you to ensure you are comfortable and informed throughout the process.

Types of Extractions

Oxford Family Dentistry offer several types of extractions to meet your needs. These include:

Simple Extractions:

These are the most common type of extraction used to remove teeth visible in the mouth. We use local anesthesia to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

Surgical Extractions:

These remove teeth that have not yet erupted from the gum line or are impacted, meaning they are stuck in the jawbone or soft tissue. During this procedure, we may need to make an incision in the gum tissue to remove the tooth.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions: This type of extraction is used to remove the third molars or wisdom teeth. It is typically recommended for patients with overcrowding, as these teeth can cause damage to other teeth if they are not removed.

What to Expect from Your Extraction Procedure

At Oxford Family Dentistry, we strive to ensure you have the best possible experience during your extraction procedure. Before your procedure, we will provide instructions on how to prepare, including what to eat, what medications to take, and how to take care of the extraction site after the procedure.

You will be given local anesthesia during the extraction procedure to ensure you are comfortable. Depending on the type of extraction you are having, you may need to have an IV sedative to help you relax during the procedure.

Recovery After a Tooth Extraction

Recovering after a tooth extraction is easier than you think! Following these simple instructions will ensure you return to smiling in no time. First, take it easy on the day of your procedure. Rest as needed, and take any antibiotics or other medications your dentist prescribed. Start slowly on day two and beyond, and drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Eat soft foods that won’t irritate your gums or get stuck in the socket where your tooth used to be. You’ll also likely experience some bleeding from the area around the extraction, but that’s completely normal. Lastly, keep your head elevated when you sleep to reduce swelling and remember not to smoke for at least 72 hours after surgery for optimal healing! With careful attention to these instructions, you can return to your regular diet in a week or less.
